Stations of the Cross for Families

I love the Stations of the Cross. They are one of my very favorite Lenten traditions, but sometimes they can feel out of reach for families.

A staple of Lent for many of us, Stations are often prayed in the evenings or smack dab in the middle of naptime, which can make it hard for younger families to attend. Don’t give up though. There are plenty of ways you can be praying the Stations of the Cross at home.

Here are my favorite resources to help you do just that.

You’ll want to have visuals for each station

I know with my own children, it is hugely helpful during any prayer time to have something concrete for them to hold or look at. Engaging multiple senses is key for engaging children.

Last year I purchased this set of wooden stations of the cross from Rough2Rustic, and I cannot wait to use them again. We hung them across our mantle, and it made for the perfect place to sit and pray each Friday morning. There is also a standing up version- both are gorgeous.

If you don’t have a budget for that, you can download my free set of Montessori 3 Part Cards (scroll to the bottom, you’ll find the link) and print a second set. That plus some string and a hole punch can help you DIY a garland.

Now, I may be biased, but I absolutely love these Stations from OSV Kids.

It was a pleasure to work with them and the amazing Adalee Hude to create something that I know your family will love.

If you’ve read Marian Consecration for Families with Young Children, you’ll recognize the format. They are designed to be simple and engaging, perfect for family or classroom (or parish use).

Take it a step further

When we start a new devotion, I find that having an activity for my children to go alongside it really helps them engage.

If Montessori has intrigued you, but you aren’t quite sure where to start, I’ve got a video lesson on how to use 3 Part Cards.

I also love teaching faith through coloring. St. John the Baptist Church has a free set of Stations of the Cross coloring pages on their website.

Lent is just around the corner, so I hope this helps your family dive into the season!
