Happy Advent! I’ve been spending time this weekend switching us over from Thanksgiving and fall decor to Advent and Christmas. One of my favorite pieces to get out is our box of Christmas books, which always get placed in a beautiful basket in our living room for easy access during the season.

In case your family needs new additions to your collection, I thought I’d share some of our favorites.

A Small Miracle

This sweet book by Peter Collington is a beautifully illustrated picture story that tells the Christmas Eve story of a poor woman who uses the last of her strength to protect a church. My kids love it. I love it. The scene where Mary holds the old woman’s hand- brings me to tears.

The Sweet Smell of Christmas

This was a childhood favorite of mine, and is a favorite of the kids. It’s a scratch and sniff book, which is just fun.

The Wild Christmas Reindeer

Sometimes children’s books teach adults lessons too. This is one of those books. It always reminds me that I need to slow down and be gentle. And like all Jan Brett books, the illustrations are stunning.

Joy To The World

This is a collection of Tomie dePaola’s Christmas stories. I love how he weaves his own faith through his tales, and these ones are just beautiful for the season.

The Miracle of Saint Nicholas

This one is going to be new to the kiddos this year, having been acquired since last Christmas, and I’m so excited to share it with them. Its a story of hope and a Christmas miracle in a small Russian town. It’s a tear jerker.

Who is Coming to Our House?

My very favorite Christmas board book, this sweet, rhythmic story has the animals preparing for the arrival of Mary and Joseph.

I Spy Christmas

We love I Spy books (especially when Mom is too tired to read!), so it’s nice to have a Christmas version.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

We got this a few years back to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12). The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is well told.

The Clown of God

Truthfully, we read this book all year, though it is really a Christmas tale. I love the story of Giovanni the clown makes Jesus smile, and so does G. It has been a favorite bedtime story of hers since she was a tot.
