What’s On Our Bookshelf Currently

I try to switch out the books we have throughout the house on a regular basis, and as I just did a swap, I thought I’d share a bit about what we’re reading right now.

  • Wonders of the World This book was a fabulous Christmas gift.. It is a coffee table book filled with gorgeous photographs, maps, and history. The kids find it endlessly fascinating, and enjoy taking it to a rug to explore.
  • Lola Reads to Leo A super sweet book about a little girl who loves books and has a new baby brother. It’s just charming, we love all of the Lola books.
  • Let There Be Light This is probably the most gorgeous creation story I’ve come across. Written by Desmond Tutu and illustrated by Nancy Tillman, this is worth it for the illustrations alone, but honestly, the text is fantastic.
  • The Tortoise and the Hare This is an illustration only book. I love having a few books out without text, so that the kids can tell the story themselves. It’s wonderful for language development and sparking conversation. I love listening to their versions of stories.
  • Pat the Bunny I feel like this one is pretty self-explanatory. Is there a parent out there who hasn’t heard of /doesn’t have Pat the Bunny?
  • Beekle I know I’ve mentioned it before, but as a perennial favorite, it is regularly in rotation.
  • N is For North Korea is a book that we received during our study of Asia. It’s a book about a girl in North Korea who finds out she has a cousin across the border and her journey to send her a message. It’s a fabulous text to teach problem solving as well as being an introduction to another culture.
  • Birds, Nests, and Eggs is descriptive and educational and full of fascinating facts.
  • Good Pictures, Bad Pictures Jr. Again, I know I’ve written about this before, but it is honestly a must have. It provides simple, direct, and helpful language about pornography, and gives parents a way to communicate on a tricky subject. It also provides steps for a child to take if they see a “bad picture” and help for parents wondering what do if their child has already seen one. If you don’t have this book on your shelf, purchase it now.
  • Baby Faces This one is for Charlotte, and is a simple, sweet, cute board book of faces. All three of our babies have loved it.
  • In the Garden with Van Gogh We have several board books from this series and love them all. They pair rhyming text with beautiful images from famous artists across all styles. They are wonderful first introductions to the world of fine art.
  • Happy Valentine’s Day Mouse I’m not going to lie, the kids love this one a lot more than I do. But it’s one of our only Valentine’s Day books, so here it is.
  • Let the Whole Earth Sing Praise Would any book list from me be complete without a Tomie de Paola book? There is always at least one in each book basket around the house. This one is a version of the Canticle of the Sun. If you’re looking for a wonderful activity to go alongside this book, check out my post on how to write your own canticle with your kids
