7 Things We Loved at The Henry Ford Museum

If you live in Metro Detroit, you’ve probably heard of The Henry Ford Museum. It’s part of our membership to Greenfield Village, but this was our first time venturing inside. And it was incredible. Huge. Detailed. Full of things that made everyone’s jaws drop.

So for today’s 7 Quick Takes, here are the 7 things we loved most on our visit to the Henry Ford Museum.

The Airplanes

Two happy pilots in the make believe plane

The Henry Ford Museum boasts several full sized airplanes from various points during the history of flight. The most jaw-dropping one was the full-sized plane suspended from the ceiling overhead. There’s also an interactive experience where you can feel what it’s like to be a daredevil who walks on the wings of planes. I think we could have gone home after this section alone.

The Cars

Gram in awe of all the cars. William recognized the Model T right away.

I knew this section was going to be a big hit with William, but I think Gram enjoyed it the most. Cars from the Model A to futuristic design cars are all laid out. There’s even a drive-in theater experience.

The Trains

He could not get over how many trains were there.

William is in a train phase, big time. His favorite part about Greenfield Village is the train. So to find out that The Henry Ford Museum has full-sized trains, and not just one or two, but a whole bunch, well that was mind-blowing to him.

The Miniature Trains

Yup, miniature trains get their own take, because the set-up was that awesome. We spent the most time of our visit just watching them. William would have stayed all day if he could have. Seriously, this was the most elaborate model train village I have ever seen.

The Machines

The machinery was Charlotte’s favorite piece of the museum, which surprised me. She studied the giant steam engines and the electrical equipment so seriously. She really contemplated all the pieces in a way that I wasn’t expecting

Santa

Look at that smile on Gram’s face!

That’s right, the Big Guy himself is at The Henry Ford. I appreciated that there were no extra charges for visiting Santa and that we could take our own pictures, which isn’t the case everywhere. Gram and Charlotte enjoyed their visit with him, but G and William were very suspicious and didn’t get too close.

The Legos!

So much fun building!

Currently at The Henry Ford there is a Lego exhibit of buildings and amazing structures taller than me. There are also countless Lego tables for kids to play and build with, and Duplos for the little ones.

Obviously we loved our trip to the Henry Ford Museum, and will absolutely be going back. The kids are already asking if we can make a trip next week, which we probably will. As the weather gets colder here, it’s a great place to be able to take advantage of. I’m grateful for our membership which allows us to go and explore as much as we want (for however long or little that may be on a given day), without having to push the kids to do more. We can just go back!

I’m linking up with Kelly this week, so make sure you head over to This Ain’t the Lyceum to read her very profound post. You don’t want to miss it.
