Pet Treats for Saint Francis: Kid Friendly Recipes for the Animals you Love

Saint Francis loved animals, and we do too. William G also love cooking and baking, so we’ve gotten into the habit in the past years of making treats for the pets and wild animals in our lives in honor of his feast day. Here are a few animal friendly recipes that you might want to try.

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin pie filling
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together ingredients and add water as needed (dough should be stiff). Roll out and cut into whatever shapes make you smile. Bake until hard, about 40 minutes. Serve when cooled.

Tuna Cat Treats

  • can of tuna fish, undrained
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all items together til dough forms. Let rest for about 10 minutes. Roll out and cut into whatever shapes make you smile. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve when cooled.

Peanut Butter Birdseed Pine Cones

  • large pine cone
  • peanut butter
  • birdseed
  • string or twine
  • parchment paper or a baking tray

Tie a string around the top of your pine cone. Slather it with peanut butter. Spread a layer of birdseed onto your baking tray or parchment paper. Roll the peanut butter covered pine cone in the birdseed until it is covered on all sides. Hang in a tree.
